Why We’re Involved…
Gannon University has been actively involved in working with the Erie community to address the issues of underage and high-risk drinking of college students since June, 2000. The university has collaborated with the community to provide a healthy social environment for its students, to educate students about policy and behavior surrounding alcohol use and misuse, and to promote positive neighborhood relations of Gannon students and community members. In 2005, Gannon joined forces with Mercyhurst College and Penn State Erie – The Behrend College in the C-COMPASS Coalition to partner proactively on the issues of underage and high-risk drinking of college students in our community.
What We’re Doing On Our Campus…
Gannon faculty, staff, and students address the issues of underage and high-risk drinking of college students through various strategies. Individual student strategies include alcohol & drug screening programs, a Student Assistance Program, EARS (Early Alert Referral System),
an Alcohol 101 education program and fines as well as disciplinary actions for alcohol policy violations.
The Gannon community makes a commitment to encourage and offer students opportunities to make healthy and responsible choices through the P.R.O.M.I.S.E. (Promoting Responsible Ongoing Management in Social Environments) initiative. Students are asked to make the P.R.O.M.I.S.E. pledge and to choose to attend many of the healthy social options offered on campus. Those alcohol and drug free options include: Late Knight Gannon events, the annual “Get Rec’d” St. Patrick’s Day party, Waldron Weekends activities, alcohol free tailgates and post game parties, speakers, movies, entertainers, athletic events, service opportunities, and Campus Ministry programs.
Two student organizations, KnightLIFE (Lifestyle Information For Everyone) and P.A.T.C.H.E.S. (Promoting Awareness Towards A Community of Healthy Educated Students), are actively involved in providing information about making healthy and responsible choices and in providing safe and fun social events on campus.
Gannon works closely with the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) and the Higher Education Center to develop strategies for addressing the alcohol issues on campus. Gannon receives funding from the PLCB for many of the campus alcohol initiatives.
